Nicasia Malbec

Catena Zapata Malbec NicasiaVineyard er en enkeltmarksvin fra en af Catena´s allerbedste marker. Nicasia marken ligger i Altamira distriktet i San Carlos regionen, i 1.180 m højde. Marken, som er beliggende 115 km syd for Mendoza by, har et af Mendoza´s bedste mikroklimaer. Markens jordbund består af 80% sand, 10% kisel og 10% ler og er dækket af en stenet overflade. De kolde nattetemperaturer i marken, resulterer i en lang modningsproces for druerne, som resulterer i en vin med stor kompleksitet, intensitet og elegance. Kun vinen fra de 11 allerbedste Malbec-fade fra Nicasia marken personligt udvalgt af Laura og Nicolas Catena, indgår i Catena Zapata Malbec Nicasia.

(these vines are planted at an altitude of 3,800 feet on fairly fertile soil): Good deep ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of black raspberry, licorice and flowers, with sexy oak tones. Plush, seamless and sweet, offering terrific floral lift to its berry and dark chocolate flavors; shows an uncanny combination of richness and verve. This Malbec has the glossy texture and velvety tannins of a great Pomerol. The slowly rising, extremely long finish saturates the palate with lush fruit.

The Nicasia vineyard is located in the far southerly growing region of Altamira en La Consulta. The grapes are hand-loaded into 225-500 liter new French oak barrels for a 100% barrel fermentation for a period of 15 days. Winemaker Alejandro Vigil ages the wine in French oak barrels for 18 months, followed by 24 months of aging in bottle before release. This wine opens with aromas of boysenberry, Turkish coffee, cedar and rose petals. This layered and complex wine delivers aromas of anise, creme de cassis, mocha and a wonderfully complex and mineral driven palate. This would pair marvelously with a juicy ribeye steak. The 2011 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard is a single-vineyard Malbec that was barrel fermented with 8% whole-cluster Cabernet Franc. The really heady, open and showy nose has nice ripeness, notes of violets and aromatic herbs. There is perfect ripeness and ultra-polished tannins that are juicy and very tasty.

This is something of an outlier at Catena, being made with 100% whole bunch fermentation in barrels. It has the classic Catena fruit sweetness, stylish oak and soft, caressing tannins, with a hint of pepper spice from the stems. Drink: 2015-19.
