Wild Sauvignon Blanc

Druerne til Greywacke Wild Sauvignon Blanc høstes om natten og bringes til vingården med ekspresfart for at bevare størst mulig friskhed. "Wild" er en henvisning til at vinen gæres på druernes naturlige gær og ikke på kunstig gær - en metode, som er forbundet med adskillige risici, men takket være Kevin Judds store omhyggelighed bliver resultatet en vin med en bemærkelsesværdig rigdom og dybde. Greywacke Wild Sauvignon Blanc byder på indtagende aromaer af citrus, mineraler, crème brûlée samt et strejf af krydderurter. Smagen er kompleks og cremet med masser af kalket mineralitet.

Oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc that is very different to the regular Sauvignon Blanc label although both share the same taut acidity and obvious chalky minerality. "Wild Sauvignon" has greater weight, richness and complexity. It is slightly funky, or reductive, but that adds extra interest to the wine and is certainly not overdone. Very classy wine that I'm sure will encourage others to imitate the style. (95 points). Tasted one year later - I must endorse the above comments and add that the wine's texture appears to have become more ethereal, or at least it is more ethereal than the earlier vintages. I love the integration and power. It seems to be a very complete example of the style and is certainly a vintage I would choose to drink now although that doesn't mean to say it won't get even better.

Lemongreen, below midway in depth. One sniff, and this is more ordinary New Zealand sauvignon blanc, clearly a cool year, green capsicum rather than red, snow peas, sweet basil 'herbs' again, but also a hint of canned peas and canned asparagus. Palate is as rich as the others, but has the complex methoxypyrazine aromatics of less ripe capsicums displayed to a tee, completely dominating the oak and MLF components. TA is a little high, too. Richard confirmed my own observations (from the literature) that when they present this wine to consumer tastings in the UK, or even to more populist magazines like Decanter, the Brits prefer this sauvignon style to the more ripe and harmonious wines. Sadly, this British quirk allows too many producers to continue exporting over-cropped, thin and under-ripe but reasonably flavourful wines propped up by frankly commercial residual sugar. Such wines are a world apart from Greywacke Sauvignon, except when Nature dictates otherwise as in 2012. The canned green notes will increase, if cellared, so best regarded as fully mature now. 2012 was indeed the coolest year in recent times, in Marlborough.

More green fruited than the 2011, with capsicum and herbs as well as tangy greengage. It does have a slight mealy note, like white burgundy, but less marked than on the 2011. On the palate, much more complex, with a creamy texture and a slightly mealy aroma and more of a hint of white Bordeaux about it. Very dry, very taut and needs another year in bottle to show its real depth, although it is already long and rich without any sense of heaviness. (JH)13.5%

The 2013 Wild Sauvignon was a tank sample about to be bottled. It opens to a gorgeous and complex floral nose laced with clover honey and yeasty notes, plus hints of almonds. Medium-bodied, this elegant Sauvignon Blanc is yeasty and toasty, and shows long in the finish.

Straw-yellow with slight light golden hues. The bouquet is showing some secondary development with asparagus and bean notes, but underlined with green stonefruits and herbs. Some breadth appearing. On palate, beginning to broaden out, but this is up-front with some intensity. Good fruit core and some asparagus and bean, but in a harmonious mix. Slight phenolic grip and the acidity keeps the mouthfeel fresh and lively. Drinking now, maybe drink up.

Distinctly wild aromas of gooseberry, fresh herbs, spices, mustard seed and horseradish. Concentrated, dense and bracing, with a serious sappiness to its peach and spice flavors. Finishes broad, dense, spicy and dry, with terrific subtle persistence. This distinctly idiosyncratic sauvignon blanc is long on personality.
