2009 Barbaresco Ovello Riserva Magnum Prod. del Barbaresco

The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is one of the more detailed, vibrant wines in this range. Sweet dark red cherries, mint, pine, graphite and crushed flowers all take shape in the glass. The typical high-toned Ovello bouquet, slightly firm tannins and energy are all there, making this one of the more site-specific of the 2009 Riservas. In 2009, the Ovello is a bit more accessible than it usually is, even if I don't quite find the visceral thrill of the very best years.

Lots of dark fruits to this with wet leaves and berries on the nose. A full body and super structure here plus firm tannins and a long, licorice and berry character. Better in 2016 but wonderful now.

The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a wine of straightforward harmony and genuine richness. The bouquet offers dark fruit, licorice, spice and tobacco. The Ovello cru shows an impressive level of overall opulence. In fact, both the Ovello and the Pajè vineyards have cooler conditions that help them excel in warm vintages like 2009. The tannins are firm and delineated. At the back, the wine offers a lasting sense of structure and character. It is beautiful now and promises an exciting evolution ahead.

A taut, steely backbone focuses this red, whose floral, strawberry and mineral flavors converge on the stiff, tannic finish. Elegant, with a huge structure lending muscle. Best from 2017 through 2029. 1,166 cases made. -BS
