2017 Craggy Range Pinot Noir Te Muna Road Martinborough

Fragrant, elegant pinot noir with floral, violet, red rose, dark cherry, plum, anise, spice and classy oak flavours. A wine with power delivered with consummate subtlety. A seductively ethereal texture and lingering finish complete the picture.

Founded in 1993, Craggy Range is known for its wines from both Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay and Te Muna Road in Martinborough. The Te Muna Road vineyard is separated into two distinct terraces, with Pinot Noir grown on the rocky, clay infused soils of the upper terrace. Hand harvested grapes are fermented in a combination of French oak and open top stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged in French oak barriques, of which around 25% are new. Drinking Window 2020 - 2028.

Plenty of rich, red and darker-cherry aromas with spices and woody allure. There's a supple and silky feel to the ripe fruit here. This has attractive depth and concentration with a wealth of fleshy, fine yet sturdy and tightly woven tannin, carrying ripe, succulent red and dark-cherry flavors. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This vintage of Pinot, grown at the bottom of the North Island, is a sassy spicy little number. It bursts forth cinnamon, clove and tree-bark aromas accompanied by ripe cranberry and red-currant fruit along with a whiff of violets. It's medium weighted, lacing crunchy fruit with the sinewy savory tannins typical to Martinborough. A little oak bitterness creeps in on the finish but overall, the fruit wins out.

Appealing for the blend of savory details and fresh fruit core, with pine needle and loam notes, cranberry and raspberry flavors, and pops of white pepper. Strikes terrific balance, particularly on the finish, where everything is in harmony. Drink now through 2032.
