2021 Chassagne Montrachet Blanc 1. Cru Morgeot Clos de La Chapelle Vougeraie

The first vintage of this Monopole vineyard purchased from the Duchesse de Magenta! The yield is decent at 33 hl/ha. 20% new wood, made in the same way as the other whites. There is a suggestion of considerable power here and distinction. Kicks on beautifully on the palate, white fruit with a few plums in the background, very good acidity, and persistent. A fine first outing.

Pulling out the stops as usual, Poillot harvested this in three times, using drone analysis to help with the picking precision. It is a gentle, lacy Morgeot with sweet, yellow fruit generosity drizzled with honey and dusted with baking spice. The well-knit structure melds into the fruit seamlessly.

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru comes from a 3.5-hectares parcel that necessitated three sorties through the vines due to variegated ripeness. It has an attractive frangipane and hazelnut scented nose that is focused and opens with aeration. The palate is well balanced, not complex yet fresher than, say, the Puligny-Village, with a bit of bite towards the finish. Give this 12 months in bottle, and it should evolve into a fine Chassagne.

(a new 4.48 ha monopole, of which 3.5 ha is planted to chardonnay; 2021 is the first vintage). A different aromatic profile presents notes of petrol, rosemary oil, spice and an interesting whiff of orange peel. There is excellent volume and punch to the bigger-bodied flavors that also possess fine richness while delivering very fine persistence on the lemony, clean and very dry finale. This could use better depth but a few years of keeping should be beneficial.
