2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Domaine Perrot-Minot

So close to Chambertin that you could almost jump across the road to reach it, this is situated in the upper part of Charmes and has some of the power and majesty of its more famous neighbour. It's another superb old-vine red from this top-notch domaine: smooth and slightly decadent, with voluptuous dark berry fruit, some whole bunch spices and considerable underlying finesse. 2026-36.

(from a 1.5 ha parcel situated directly across from Domaine Rousseau's parcel of Chambertin). Mild reduction pushes the fruit to the background but I doubt that it will last. Otherwise there is excellent size, weight and intensity to the tautly muscular, precise and powerful big-bodied flavors that also flash an interesting hint of citrus character on the very tightly wound finish. Like several of the wines in the range this is going to require at least some bottle age to unwind and flesh out as this is quite linear and youthfully austere today. Drink 2028+ .

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a slightly muffled bouquet that requires more clarity. Dark berry fruit, hints of leather and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, and although it is missing a little depth, it is driven by the fine bead of acidity and feels pert and fresh on the finish - very "Charmes". Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. 2020 - 2030 .

An elegant style, evoking black currant, black cherry, violet and spice aromas and flavors. Silky and harmonious, its firm structure is well-integrated with the fruit detail and texture. Ends with flashes of earth, spice and mineral. Best from 2023 through 2043. 18 cases imported.
