2013 Pignatuni Etna Rosso Le Vigne di Eli

The 2013 'Pignatuni' is a gorgeous wine, impressive for its wonderful silky tannins and seamless texture. This clean, precise Rosso is composed of 98% Nerello Mascalese and 2% Nerello Cappuccio and features aromas and flavors of red berries, smoky minerals, mint, spices and crushed rose petal which all come together beautifully. It continues to impress with its outstanding overall balance and pretty finish which firms up and leaves behind delicious red berries lingering. A superb effort from Marco de Grazia. Savory and sophisticated tones of dried cherry, tobacco and violets appear on the bouquet of the 2013 Etna Rosso Pignatuni. The craftsmanship here is excellent and this wine shows crisp lines and focused mineral tones that are backed by firm, but dusty tannins. Ruby brilliance leads to a lean consistency and moderate color extraction. The wine is steadily focused on presenting the elegant, nuanced and floral side of Etna. Marco De Grazia has done a wonderful job in a difficult vintage.

Vivid red. Deep red cherry and berry aromas are complicated by lavender on the reticent nose. Then rich, thick and brawny in the mouth, with the red cherry and floral flavors coming across as classically dry. Finishes with serious tannic bite and excellent tactile length. This is much more tannic and austere than the Moganazzi-Volta Sciara, but also has greater aging potential. The vines were planted in the 1950s at roughly 750 to 800 meters above sea level.
