Porseleinberg Syrah Swartland Boekenhoutskloof

Vinen laves nu på den meget lille vingård på Porselein Mountain. Der anvendes vildgær og men vinificerer ikke i nye, franske egetræsfade (barriques), men kun i de banebrydende nye æggeformede cementtanke og meget store (2500 liter) egefade, for at bevare fokus på den unikke frugt fra de vindomsuste marker. Resultatet er en meget mørkerød vin, en stor bouquet af sort, moden frugt med masser af krydderi, en kopleks, knitrende sort Syrah med stor dybde og intensitet. Influenced by some time spent at Domaine Jamet in Côte Rôtie - particularly their use of a submerged cap during fermentation - Callie Louw has made a stunning Syrah, proving his skills as both a farmer and a winemaker. In 2018, the style has shifted, away from power and grip to something more scented and refined. Focused, nuanced and very delicately oaked, with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, clove and white pepper spice and textured tannins. Simply world class. 2023-35”

The 2018 Porseleinberg is 100% whole-bunch-fermented in concrete; this is the first vintage that winemaker Callie Louw submerged the cap. It has a complex bouquet of blackberry, melted tar, clove and light garrigue aromas, all beautifully defined and focused, constantly changing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, touches of white pepper on the entry and firm tannins. This is very Old World in style, leading to a very peppery finish that is slightly drier and more saturnine than previous vintages. While not the greatest Porseleinberg I have tasted, it is a testament to its high standards that it still ranks among the best wines of the vintage.

Beginning with a dark ruby core with magenta highlights, the 2018 Syrah open to a bright, lifted fruit array with intense aromatics of black cherry, dark plum and black raspberry before making way to a beautiful spice rack of black peppercorn, dried herbs and freeze-dried strawberry with a mineral essence. Medium to full-bodied, the wine continues to somersault in the mouth, offering a delightful array of dusty roses, lavender and lilac, black peppercorn and potpourri. Juicy acidity and high toned, red fruit flavors express in waves with a kiss of iodine and umami with a delightful mineral tension. The wine finishes with elements of graphite and black raspberry that sway with a taught, dusty essence, long, lingering spice notes and firm, buttressing tannins.

Though savory at first, with an herbal overtone of bay leaf and dried lavender and a dark, tangy iron note layered deep, this full-bodied red is nonetheless richly fruit-forward, with a range of blackberry preserves, roasted fig and crème de cassis. Expands on the fresh, focused palate, returning on the chalky finish to the fragrant floral and spice notes. Best from 2023 through 2033.
