Pinot Noir

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir er vingårdens absolutte ikonvin. Den fremstilles af druer fra Ata Rangis ældste vinstokke. Druerne håndhøstes og gennemgår derpå en skånselsløs håndsortering, drue for drue, så det kun er de bedste af de bedste, som anvendes. 30% af druerne der presses er whole closter (hele klaser). Vinen lagres 11 måneder på franske egetræsfade (35% nye) og den aftappes ufiltreret. Duften er stor og kompleks, og byder på raffinerede noter af intens bærfrugt, rose, anis og et strejf af parfume. Smagen leder tankerne i retning af stor rød Bourgogne, og den imponerer med sin kompleksitet og koncentration. Eftersmagen er lang og silkeagtig.En sand Grand Cru fra New Zealand.

Chalk another notch in the belt because Ata Rangi [Pinot Noir 2008] is at the top of the tree again. Amid ever-increasing competition, its class and pedigree sails from the glass.

This is one of Ata Rangi's best ever wines. It has a silken, mouth-filling texture, although the layering of fruit and savoury flavours is nearly as appealing. I'm not sure how they can improve on this wine.

A beautiful red with very velvety tannins and dried strawberry character. Full-bodied yet tightly bound. It is going to give more all in three or four years. Firm and delicious now.

A very cool start to the season, with combined heat units for October and November 2009 the lowest we'd recorded since 1992 (when fine ash from the 1991 Mt Pinatubo eruption created cool, overcast conditions for over two years). Flowering was 2-3 weeks late and patchy, with January more overcast than usual. We went into March feeling pretty nervous, but from mid March on, we experienced idyllic weather, with warm, dry, sunny days and cool nights, a pattern that was consistent through to the middle of May. Harvest began two weeks late, with fruit arriving in beautiful condition. GDD 1,060, 10% whole bunch. Darker and more savoury than 2009. Excellent balance of smoky-savoury and fresh dark- red fruit. Cool and full of energy. Dry, silky and so elegant.(JH) Drink 2015-2022 .

Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2010 Pinot Noir presented a little closed, with earthy, loam and underbrush aromas over cranberries, red cherries and red currants plus a whiff of lavender. Medium-bodied and elegant in the mouth, it has low to medium levels of very finely knit tannins that are balanced alongside a medium to high level of soft acidity. It finishes long and earthy. Approachable now, it should drink to 2017+ .

Good medium red. Dark aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and licorice. The palate shows very good cut and underlying spine to the flavors of sweet dark fruits complicated by spices and minerals. Densely packed, serious, deep pinot with the minerality and energy for mid-term aging. I'd hold this at least three years.

Top-Scoring Pinot Noirs from New Zealand" liste juni 2012: "Exotic aromatics of mahogany and sandalwood follow through to supple red licorice, cranberry, cherry and raspberry flavors that are elegant, precise and balanced. Baking spice details of clove and nutmeg persist on the finish. Drink now through 2020.

When Ata Rangi was recognised by its peers as being the first equal producer of Pinot Noir in this country I thought the honour well deserved. As an early pioneer of top Pinot Noir this small family company has never rested on its laurels but has worked hard to build an even better wine every year. This is one of Ata Rangi's best ever wines. The star feature is a silken, mouth-filling and totally seductive texture although the complex layering of fruit and savoury flavours is nearly as appealing. I find it hard to imagine how they can improve on this wine ... but they will.
